Information for Students

Message to Prospective Students

Dear Prospective Student,

Thank you for your interest in our research group.  We enjoy what we do and appreciate when others take an interest in our efforts.  In our group we blend control theory and practice, while making real environmental and economic impacts by improving the operation of energy systems.  Please explore the TFC Lab homepage for more information about our current research projects.

We are always looking for students whose interests match our vision and whose abilities will be an asset to the group. However, similar to most professors, I receive a large amount of email from prospective students and often I am unable to respond personally.  I sincerely appreciate those students who review our research projects and publications and can express why our research matches their interests and background.

You should understand that I personally do not make decisions regarding admission to Texas A&M University or the Mechanical Engineering Dept. If you are interested in joining our group, you must first complete an application for admission.  After admission, I like to meet with students personally before inviting them to join our research group.  In this way I can determine which students will contribute to both our research endeavors and our esprit de corps.   I consider a broad range of criteria when reviewing potential students, including academic performance, practical experience, personality, and current needs within the group. Unfortunately, natural limitations on my time mean that I can't advise every qualified graduate or undergraduate student.

Texas A&M is a great place to be, I would encourage you to visit campus and the TFC lab to decide if it is the right match for you. I look forward to meeting you.  Go Aggies!

Sincerely,

Bryan Rasmussen

Letters of Recommendation

I am happy to provide letters of recommendation or serve as a reference for students.  I feel most comfortable writing letters for students who I know personally through classes or research experiences in my lab.  I may choose to decline to write a letter or serve as a reference if I feel that I can't be strong advocate on your behalf.

To ensure that I have the time and materials necessary to write an appropriate letter, I request the following:

  1. Talk to me 2-3 weeks in advance; this will ensure I have the time I need.  Additionally, I may be able to offer advice on the application process. Provide me with a copy of any relevant instructions.

  2. If you require copies for multiple schools or fellowships, please provide me with a bulleted list of each school/department or fellowship and the associated deadlines.

  3. Reference form (if applicable).

  4. Personal resume.

  5. Unofficial transcript.

  6. Statement of purpose/personal statement.  For example, if you are applying to graduate school, I would like to know whether you are interested in MS or PhD, research or just courses, possible research topics, etc.

  7. Stamped, addressed envelopes.  I will sign across the seal, and the letters should remain sealed whether I give the letters to you, or if they are mailed directly.  If the letters are submitted online, please provide the web address and any necessary instructions.
