Current Graduate Students

Young-Joon Chang, PhD

(Jan. 2006 - present)

Young-Joon's research focuses on developing stable gain-scheduled control strategies with application to AC&R systems.

Matthew Elliott, MS/PhD

(Apr. 2006 - present)

Matt and is developing an experimental testbed for subcritical multi-evaporator AC&R systems, and is examining nonlinear Model Predictive Control strategies for these systems.

Ameen Aboel-Hassan, PhD

(Jan. 2008 - present)

Ameen is developing dynamic model validation algorithms that can be implemented in real-time.  The resulting techniques will be valuable for modeling, robust control design, and fault detection.

Bhaskar Shenoy, MS/PhD

(May 2007 - present)

Bhaskar is developing custom dynamic models under a joint Honeywell/ASHRAE research project, and developing physics based model reduction methods for complex heat exchanger models.

Nataraj Kumar, MS

(Apr. 2008 - present)

Nataraj is exploring model parameter identification for vapor compression systems modeling.

Current Undergraduate Students

Byron Bolding

(May 2007 - present)

Byron is evaluating the potential for temperature and humidity control of residential air conditioners using variable speed fan control.

Sean Elliston

(May 2007 - present)

Sean is working on experimental evaluation of start-up and shut-down transients for residential air-conditioners.

Kristine Test

(May 2008 - present)

Kristine is evaluating Iterative Learning Control algorithms for identifying optimal sequencing strategies for HVAC systems.

Craig Warren

(Sept. 2008 - present)

Craig is constructing and testing a controlled Wilberforce pendulum, with wireless sensors.

Former Graduate Students

Abhishek Gupta, MS

(Feb. 2006 - Dec. 2007)

Abhi developed finite difference models for mutli-phase heat exchangers, and examined their connections to the moving boundary models, which are better suited for control.

Aarti Ramani, MS

(Nov. 2006 - present)

Aarti helped develop custom dynamic models under a Sponsored Research Agreement with Marvin Land Systems.

Former Undergraduate Students

Alex Bleakie

(May 2006 - Dec. 2006)

Alex created a library of heat transfer coefficient correlation subroutines to be included with the Thermosys software.

Juan Munoz

(Aug. 2006 - Dec. 2006)

Juan assisted in developing an experimental AC&R testbed.

Shana Van Fleet

(May 2007 - Aug. 2007)

Shana assisted in assembling and instrumenting a residential heat-pump and air conditioning system for transient analysis.

Zachary Walton

(May 2007 - May 2008)

Zach helped test an novel actuator for control of Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration systems.
