The Institute for Innovation and Design in Engineering (IIDE), within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, has as its mission to:

  • Carry out  the research needed to better understand what constitutes a superior and effective design activity;
  • Develop a sound foundation of knowledge about the dynamics and cognitive needs of a superior design activity;
  • Formulate the methodologies and pedagogical tools needed to educate current and future professionals in how to produce superior designs; and
  • Establish a structure and framework within which design activities can be conducted effectively, efficiently, and with a high degree of innovation.

Towards these ends we strive to:

  • Elevate the fundamental level of understanding of the engineering design process, and hence develop methodologies to improve the execution and management of designs.
  • Develop methodologies and vehicles for efficiently imparting this knowledge to graduate and undergraduate engineering students, as well as to practicing engineers.
  • Practice, test and continuously improve the quality of the knowledge base and recommended design procedures by teaming with industry partners to have students apply these procedures while executing designs for new products and/or processes for industrial application.
  • Build a long-term, mutually-beneficial university/industry partnership by:
    • Enhancing the quality and efficiency of the design process and hence, of the products produced by that process;
    • Creating new products and processes and/or increasing the value of existing products;
    • Reducing the time to market for new products; and
    • Developing procedures whereby the students and faculty resources of Texas A&M University can be integrated with industry needs in such a manner that the IIDE can act as an on-line extension of the industrial partner's staff, while at the same time maintaining confidentiality, in the development of new products and the improvement of existing products
  • Improving the quality, value, and recognition of Texas A&M's engineering graduates as designers, problem solvers, and innovative future leaders of industry.

Financial support to the IIDE sustains the continued growth and development of the IIDE’s methods for superior designing and superior training of both graduate and undergraduate engineering students.  As a supporter of the IIDE we encourage you to also participate with us in our educational function by working with our students on the design of a product or system of current importance to you.  Additionally, we encourage you to avail yourself of other resources that we offer.  These include:

  • Short-term or Long-term (contractual) project/process/product design work.
  • Project-specific research.
  • Short courses in design methods, innovation, and design management.
  • Technology identification, product design, and identification of new product lines.
  • The use of integrated (concurrent) design methodologies to improve manufacturability and product quality.
  • Techniques to enhance the level of innovation in the design of products and/or processes.
  • The use of superior design methods to reduce product development times.
  • The exposure of practicing designers to the newest methodologies applicable to design.
  • Identifying, implementing and exploiting new/applicable technologies to improve competitiveness.

We assure you that you will find your involvement in IIDE to be an enriching experience with profits in human and economic terms.  For additional information, feedback, or comments, please contact:
